On Wednesday, Rex Ryan and the Buffalo Bills made NFL history when they hired Kathryn Smith as their special teams quality control coach.
Smith, previously an administrative assistant to Ryan this season, spent 12 years with the New York Jets, first as a game-day/special events intern in 2003 before working her way up to assistant to the head coach in 2014.
Smith is the latest female to join the coaching ranks in professional sports, following Becky Hammon, an assistant with the San Antonio Spurs, and Jen Welter, an inside linebackers coaching intern for the Arizona Cardinals during training camp.
