Having been gashed for 182 yards rushing in last week’s loss to Cleveland, the Broncos’ defense will face another kind of running test Sunday against Washington.
Quarterback Taylor Heinicke’s ability to extend the play has allowed him to rush for 222 yards. Heinicke, who started Washington’s wild-card game last year against Tampa Bay, took over this year when Ryan Fitzpatrick sustained a hip injury in a Week 1 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.
“(Heinicke has) done a really nice job,” Broncos coach Vic Fangio said before practice Wednesday. “Schematically, they do a lot with the quarterback and run a lot of run (and) play-action stuff and he’s done well with it.
