The Denver Broncos hold the final pick in the first round of the NFL Draft after winning Super Bowl 50. Although the Broncos have several key free agents, they remain in a position to make the Super Bowl again next season. However, drafting a bust early could cause them to take a step back next year. With that in mind, here are three players the Broncos need to avoid in the first round.
3. Jason Spriggs, OT, Indiana Hoosiers
The Broncos need offensive line help, and Spriggs looked very athletic at the NFL Combine. That could help push him into the first round. While there's no doubting Spriggs' athletic ability, he didn't look like a first round pick at Indiana. He's not that strong and could struggled against bigger, stronger lineman in the NFL. Spriggs would be a great second round selection for Denver, but he'd be a reach in Round One.
2. Scooby Wright, MLB, Arizona Wildcats
Wright has talent, but he shouldn't be the Broncos' first round pick. He had a monster sophomore season, but took a step back in his junior year because of injuries. The Broncos could need another linebacker if Danny Trevathan leaves, but Wright isn't the answer in round one. Those injury issues might not go away and Wright is better off being taken in the second round. He's a fun player to watch, but the Broncos are better off hoping Reggie Ragland slips to them than reaching for Wright. For more Broncos news, download the Chat Sports Android and iPhone app.
1. Jaylon Smith, LB, Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Before the NFL Combine, the idea of Smith being in play for Denver was a pipe dream. He has top five talent and would have been a perfect fit in Cincinnati. But then came the report that the knee injury he suffered at the end of last season resulted in nerve damage. That's the kind of injury that will result in teams taking Smith off the board entirely. While Smith has Patrick Willis-type potential, his injury means the Broncos simply can't risk making him a first round pick.
