NFL Free Agency isn't over yet, but we're nearly through the first month and over 100 players have signed. Among the teams close to being finished is the Denver Broncos. The front office didn't have a boatload of cap space to work with - and they are still waiting on a potential Tony Romo decision - but they found a way to make a few notable moves this free agency.
This grades include trades, retirements, signings, re-signings and releases. With that in mind, here's our free agency grade for the Broncos.
Key Additions/Re-Signings:
OG Ronald Leary, OT Menelik Watson, DT Domata Peko, DE Zach Kerr, LB Kasim Edebali
Denver had made it a point this offseason to upgrade their offense line, and the additions of Leary and Watson certainly help with that. Both players will start right away and make significant impacts. However, Watson has struggled with injuries throughout his entire career, starting just 17 games in last four years. The Broncos are gambling on him staying healthy - because he's really, really good when healthy.
As for the others, Peko is a declining veteran who is basically just a stopgap given the need at the position. Kerr was a backup in his three years with the Colts, and the Broncos are hoping he can perform well in a rotation role. Edebali was another depth signing as a situational pass rusher.
Key Losses/Cuts:
OLB/DE DeMarcus Ware (retirement), NT Sylvester Williams (Titans), OT Russell Okung (Chargers)
Ware had limited impact last season due to injury and had seen his role diminish over the last few years, so it wasn't a real surprise to see him retiring. And, as such, his loss hurts - but it isn't devastating. Okung was simply on the books for too much money ($11.7 million) and didn't play up to his salary. Williams also wasn't expected to return after the Broncos declined the fifth year option on his rookie contract, but he was still a major contributor on defense. It's never a good thing to lose those guys.
Grade: D+
Denver succeeded in upgrading their offensive line, but four of their five big signings come with either major question marks or are expected to fill reserve roles. Their three big losses were all starters, and they didn't really replace that production.
