The Denver Broncos fell short of their Super Bowl aspirations last year, and with a new coaching staff, they’re hoping to break that threshold this season. Here are three things we've learned about them so far in training camp:
C.J. Anderson emerging as top back
Anderson and Montee Ball have been battling it out for the top running back job, but Anderson is getting almost all of the work with the first-team offense.
“I'm super comfortable. We're going to do what we do best, whether that's running the ball or putting the ball in the air. [We] just continue to keep repping, keep repping, keep repping and keep repping because of muscle memory,” Anderson said. “You could probably put a blindfold on and make the right cut.”
Cody Latimer impressing
Latimer struggled with injuries and inconsistency during his rookie season, but Denver's second-round pick from last year looks poised to have a breakout season.
“Cody's explosive. He makes big catches," fellow wideout Demaryius Thomas said. "I think he's been actually working on his game with route running. He came in raw at the beginning. Now he's getting off the presses and running deep. He's doing great at the top of the routes and making plays on the ball. It's a big difference. I was the exact same way. He's going to be good.”
Peyton Manning's arm has "more zip"
Those worried about the status of Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning's throwing arm which seemed to lose some zing as the 2014 regular season wound down have some room for optimism after wide receiver Demaryius Thomas' training camp assessment.
"I know you're not going to believe this, but it seems like he has more zip," Thomas told reporters, via Mike Klis of 9News in Denver.
Broncos GM John Elway seconded that notion, saying that "Peyton has thrown the ball tremendously in camp. He looks great."
New head coach Gary Kubiak is doing his part, overseeing the installment of a more balanced offensive attack meant to bring the ground game more into focus, especially as the weather gets colder and the season extends into the December stretch run.
