Peyton Manning hasn't been a backup quarterback since his first year with the Tennessee Volunteers, but that's the role he'll likely find himself in for the Denver Broncos' regular season finale against the San Diego Chargers.
Per Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk:
"Broncos coach Gary Kubiak said today that the plan is for Manning to dress for Sunday’s game against the Chargers and serve as the No. 2 quarterback behind Brock Osweiler. That’s a departure from what Kubiak first said when Manning was taken out of the lineup with a foot injury. At that time, Kubiak said that Manning would start when he was healthy enough to play."
As it appears now, Manning will at least be healthy enough to be active on Sunday. It's unclear whether this speaks to the team's faith in Osweiler, a lack of confidence in Manning after his struggles to start the season, or is just an extra bit of precaution before the team turns to Manning in the playoffs.
Manning still leads the NFL with 17 interceptions despite not playing the last six games with a foot injury. Osweiler hasn't been spectacular in his absence, but he's been a solid game manager who's done well to limit mistakes and push the offense forward.
We'll have more on the quarterback situation in the Mile High City as additional information is made available.
