Both teams played sloppy at the start of the latest installment in the Tom Brady-Peyton Manning rivalry, but the Denver Broncos managed to grab a 7-3 lead after the first quarter.
New England responded with 24 straight points in the second quarter, taking the game over with a 27-7 halftime lead.
The Patriots were able to put things on cruise control from there as they held on for the surprisingly easy victory.
Turning Point:
The Broncos were starting to lose control of the game in the second quarter after a Patriots touchdown put them up 13-7, but Denver had to punt the ball away after just five plays on the ensuing possession. Julian Edelman returned that punt 84 yards for a touchdown, breaking the game wide open.
Key Stat:
Denver only converted three third downs on the day, which ended a lot of their drives earlier than usual and stopped them from keeping up with New England's offensive explosion.
New England MVP:
Tom Brady dominated this game from start to finish, passing for 333 yards and four touchdowns, but he has to split this award with Edelman. The wideout absolutely took over the second quarter, catching a touchdown pass and then returning the ensuing punt for a touchdown. He finished with nine catches for 95 yards and those touchdowns.
Denver MVP:
Wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders continued his hot streak with 10 catches for 151 yards in this game, and has emerged as Manning's favorite target.
What’s Next?
The Patriots have asserted themselves as one of the best teams in the league, and have a bye week before facing the Colts in Indianapolis. Denver will try and get back on track in Oakland next season against the Raiders.
