The start of the 2017 NFL Draft is just one day away, and the Denver Broncos hold the No. 20 overall pick. The Broncos could try to move up or down, but it's a bit more likely they keep the pick. Denver is hoping to add an impact player that can help them return to the playoffs - but that doesn't mean it has to be one of the usual suspects. Here are three surprise picks the Broncos could make in the first round that could shock everyone:
3) Zach Cunningham, LB, Vanderbilt Commodores
This wouldn't be all that shocking since Denver does need middle linebacker help, but it would be a surprise to see Cunningham come off the board this high. He is a great run stopper and has good instincts, but is very limited in pass coverage. If the Broncos decide to prioritize need, Cunningham could be their guy.
2) Malik McDowell, DT, Michigan State Spartans
I don't think this would happen, but that's kind of the point, right? Denver doesn't necessarily need more defensive talent in the front seven, but they often choose to take the best player available - and McDowell has the talent and upside worthy of a top 15 pick. However, he interviewed terribly at the Combine and said he wasn't coachable. That will hurt his draft stock, but a team like the Broncos might be willing to take a risk.
1) Dalvin Cook, RB, Florida State Seminoles
Staying with that best player available approach, we have Cook. Denver does have C.J. Anderson, and they like him a lot, but he needs help with Devontae Booker proving to be less than reliable. That makes a running back like Dalvin Cook an option. He's likely on the board for the Broncos but could fall out of the first round because teams are very concerned about his history of shoulder problems and off-the-field incidents. But if Denver are willing overlook those and take the risk, it would be quality value.
