The Denver Broncos traded up to draft quarterback Paxton Lynch, hoping he can become their franchise quarterback. After losing Brock Osweiler in free agency and Peyton Manning's retirement, Lynch has the ability to compete for playing time right away. Here are three reasons why he will thrive with the Broncos:
3) Strong mentorship
Mark Sanchez and Trevor Siemian are the only other quarterbacks on the roster, and neither are the kind of experienced quarterback that can mentor him. Lucky for the Broncos, their general manager is one of the all-time best to ever play the position. John Elway has already taken Lynch under his wing and will do everything he can to help him be successful.
2) Defense will carry them
Much like last year, Denver will have one of the top defenses in the NFL again, taking almost all the pressure off the offense to produce at a high rate. Lynch will undoubtedly make mistakes as a rookie, but the Broncos have the defense to cover for him and will keep those mistakes from severely hurting the team.
1) Offense designed for success
Even if Lynch is thrown into the fire earlier than expected, the offense isn't reliant on the quarterback to be elite. Both Manning and Osweiler struggled with turnovers last year, and they combined to average just seven yards per attempt. That involves a lot of checkdowns and short routes - nothing too complex in the eyes of the quarterback. Given Lynch's accuracy and smart decision making, he could actually eliminate those two weaknesses of Denver's passing attack.
