The Denver Broncos have a few different needs they could address in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft.
Drafting a franchise quarterback is the sexiest move for Denver, but after losing starters Malik Jackson (defensive end) and Danny Trevathan (inside linebacker), it would make sense for the Broncos to shore up one of those positions. Depth at the safety and running back positions are also concerns, but those can likely wait until the later rounds.
With these pain points in mind, who are three prospects the Super Bowl champs could realistically target at No. 31?
3) Robert Nkemdiche, Ole Miss DT
The former top high school recruit has lost some of his luster due to underwhelming numbers at Ole Miss and off-field concerns, but that doesn't mean the Broncos aren't still attracted to his incredible potential. With Jackson gone, Denver could go boom or bust hoping that Nkemdiche's athleticism translates at the next level. With the right coaching and mentoring from the vets on the roster, this defensive lineman could be one of the steals of the draft.
2) Darron Lee, Ohio State LB
There's a good chance Lee is gone by the time the Broncos are up, but if he's still on the board, John Elway and co. would be wise to grab the Ohio State standout. Lee is better suited for a 4-3 defense at this stage, but could still lean on his athleticism to excel in Denver's 3-4. Notre Dame's Jaylon Smith is another option here, but his devastating knee injury has him sliding down boards.
1) Connor Cook, Michigan State QB
There are a handful of quarterbacks that could go early, but there's a good chance one of the most NFL-ready signal-callers will still be around when Denver's pick comes around. Michigan State's Connor Cook represents the best option for the Broncos once Carson Wentz, Jared Goff and Paxton Lynch are all long gone, as he could come in and immediately push for Mark Sanchez for the starting QB job. Cook may not offer the highest upside, but he's a solid selection for the late first round.
