Each year, several veterans end up getting cut or traded by their teams before the start of the regular season. That will likely be the case this year for Denver Broncos. The Broncos are the defending champions, but could turn to younger players over veterans once roster cuts begin.
There are a few veterans who might end up not being on the Denver roster at the start of the season. That could come via a trade, or more likely, a release. With that in mind, here are three veterans who are on the bubble to make the Broncos' roster.
Punter Britton Colquitt
Colquitt is the highest paid punter in the NFL and has been with the Broncos since 2009. But that didn't stop the Broncos from using a seventh rounder on punter Riley Dixon. It will be an open training camp battle, and Colquitt's $4 million salary cap hit will work against him. If Dixon performs well in the preseason and training camp, the Broncos won't hesitate to save money and cut (or trade) Colquitt.
RB Juwan Thompson
Thompson's future, and even position, with the Broncos is unclear. C.J. Anderson and Ronnie Hillman are locks at RB, and fourth round pick Devonte Booker likely is as well. Thompson could shift to fullback, but the Broncos spent a sixth rounder on Andy Janovich. The Broncos are only going to carry four backs, and if Janovich makes the roster, it's Thompson who will lose his spot.
S Shiloh Keo
Keo ended up with a job last offseason after tweeting at Broncos defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. However, the 28-year-old safety could be back on the open market to start the season. Darian Stewart and T.J. Ward are still the starters and the team drafted two more safeties this year in third rounder Justin Simmons and sixth rounder William Parks. Keo and Parks could fight for the last safety spot, but Keo's job isn't as secure as it was before the draft.
