Sasho Cirovski, coach of the top-ranked University of Maryland men’s soccer team, endured a harrowing weekend — and it had nothing to do with four of his players stricken by food poisoning, an injury to a star midfielder or the Terrapins needing to overcome a two-goal deficit to defeat Michigan and remain unbeaten.
On Friday afternoon, as he was preparing for practice, Cirovski answered a call from his brother in Canada.
“Are you sitting down?” Vancho said.
“Oh, no,” Sasho replied.
Their mother, Ljubica, 83, had been struck by a vehicle while crossing a street near her home in Windsor, Ontario.
