Although a major tournament is rapidly approaching, the U.S. men’s national team match in Puerto Rico on Sunday wasn’t so much a tune-up or friendly as an exercise.
Only eight of the 23 players selected to the Copa America Centenario squad were on the field in Bayamon, the rest bound for Dallas for the formal start of training camp ahead of the 16-nation competition.
The goal scorers in the 3-1 victory at Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium included a left back (Tim Ream) who didn’t make the Copa cut and a forward (Paul Arriola) who was among seven supplemental invitees for the Puerto Rico trip.
