The Washington Spirit on Friday extended its lead atop the National Women’s Soccer League standings and all but secured a playoff berth with a 2-1 victory over the Orlando Pride before 7,052 at Camping World Stadium in central Florida.
Rookie forward Cheyna Williams scored in the 37th minute and midfielder Christine Nairn maintained her outstanding form with a goal early in the second half as the Spirit (11-3-2) won its third straight and for the sixth time in seven outings.
Substitute Sarah Hagen scored in the 71st minute for Orlando (6-10-0).
Losses by Sky Blue FC and the Seattle Reign on Saturday would clinch a postseason spot for Washington with four matches to spare.
