The Spirit beat the Red Stars in the NWSL final on Saturday in Louisville. The win capped a season of turmoil for Washington that included the firing of its head coach amid a leaguewide abuse scandal, a coronavirus outbreak and a public power struggle between its owners. It is the first title for a top-flight women’s professional soccer team from Washington since the Freedom, led by Mia Hamm and Abby Wambach, won the Women’s United Soccer Association title in 2003.
