Washington Spirit clinches NWSL playoff berth with 1-1 draw against Western New York

With a 1-1 draw against the Western New York Flash on Saturday, the Washington Spirit secured a National Women’s Soccer League playoff berth for the third consecutive year and inched closer to finishing atop the 10-team standings.

But the Spirit (11-3-3) showed vulnerability throughout the night, and after taking the lead on Katie Stengel’s goal midway through the second half, the hosts conceded Samantha Mewis’s 86th-minute equalizer before 4,527 at Maryland SoccerPlex.

The Flash (8-5-4) recorded advantages in shots (25-8), shots on goal (13-4) and corner kicks (7-2) but misfired on several chances and was thwarted by goalkeeper Kelsey Wys (12 saves).
