AUSTIN — As the minutes passed and a goal remained elusive Thursday, the U.S. men’s national soccer team found itself in a position that, almost two hours earlier, seemed inconceivable.
Dominant in almost every aspect of the Concacaf Nations League quarterfinal’s first leg — and sporting a man advantage since late in the first half — the United States desperately pressed for a breakthrough before erupting for three late goals and forging a 3-0 victory over overmatched Trinidad and Tobago.
With those late reprieves, the Americans will need just a draw or defeat by fewer than three goals on the road Monday to advance to the March final four in Arlington, Tex.
