Assembling a roster for soccer matches is not a simple proposition these days, so when Gregg Berhalter announced his U.S. men’s national team squad Wednesday for two friendlies in separate countries three days apart next week, it came with caveats.
The Americans will play Jamaica in Wiener Neustadt, Austria, on March 25 and Northern Ireland in Belfast three days later. Because of coronavirus pandemic travel restrictions, however, five players who are employed in Germany and one apiece in France and Portugal are only available for the first match.
Rejoining their clubs from the United Kingdom would have required them to quarantine for an extended period and miss late-season league matches.
