The U.S. women’s national team was on its way to a 2-0 victory over Japan on Sunday in Cleveland when thunderstorms halted the friendly and ultimately forced it to be abandoned.
A crowd of 23,535 attended at FirstEnergy Stadium, a record turnout for a women’s match in Ohio. The previous mark was 23,101 in Columbus 17 years ago.
Julie Johnston scored in the 27th minute and Alex Morgan struck in the 62nd.
The U.S. Soccer Federation said it was awaiting word from FIFA on whether the result and statistics will count.
Next on their Olympic preparation tour, the Americans will face South Africa on July 9 at Chicago’s Soldier Field (1 p.
