The U.S. men’s national soccer team opened the 2016 schedule Sunday with a friendly that, come World Cup qualifiers and Copa America, will be long forgotten by most everyone. But for D.C. United’s Steve Birnbaum, the match against Iceland will remain fresh in his mind for a long time.
In just his second international appearance, Birnbaum assisted on the tying goal and scored the match-winner on a 90th-minute header as the Americans came from behind twice for a 3-2 victory at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.
A center back entering his third MLS season, Birnbaum came on at the start of the second half for ailing Brad Evans and used his aerial expertise on a pair of goals.
