Billionaire Todd Boehly and executive Jennifer Tepper Mackesy, William & Mary graduates with deep ties in sports circles, said Tuesday they are heading a group in exclusive negotiations to purchase controlling interest in the Washington Spirit women’s soccer team.
The group, they said, also includes Jonathan Goldstein, chief executive of Cain International, a real estate investment firm; and Kendrick Ashton and Craig Dixon, co-founders of The St. James, a high-end sports complex with a location in Springfield.
“Owning a sports team is a community trust and we look forward to working together to support the players, continue the on the field momentum from their championship run, and ensure our club is a positive force in the community as we work toward a final agreement,” Mackesy and Boehly said in a written statement.
