Was it when the 12 founding teams promised that the new European club championship would actually be good for continental soccer, that it would provide “support for the benefit of the entire European football pyramid” even though it would be closed to nearly all of its teams? Was it the time that the prime minister of a world power had to drop everything during a pandemic to address the dynamics of a sporting event? Maybe it was the time when a Super League owner said “nobody cares” about the vast majority of the games in the Champions League, a tournament consumed by hundreds of millions of television viewers?
