CARY, N.C. — You can pinpoint plenty of reasons to overlook the Washington Spirit when the NWSL playoffs unfold over the next month.
Midfield general Andi Sullivan and elite rookie Croix Bethune will miss the postseason with serious knee injuries. Co-leading scorer Ouleymata Sarr hasn’t played since early September because of a back injury. Prized midseason acquisition Leicy Santos has been limited by a thigh issue. The influx of injuries has left Coach Jonatan Giráldez, himself a midseason arrival, with limited opportunities to build chemistry and cohesion.
