Rose Lavelle, a 22-year-old midfielder who has quickly risen to prominence with the U.S. women’s national team, scored early in the second half Thursday as the Americans defeated Sweden, 1-0, in a friendly in Gothenburg, Sweden.
In her fifth appearance since making her international debut in March, the Boston Breakers member collected Crystal Dunn’s pass and recorded her second goal as the second-ranked Americans ended a four-game winless streak against the No. 6 Swedes. The previous meeting came in last summer’s Olympics, a Swedish victory on penalty kicks in the quarterfinals.
Washington Spirit midfielder Mallory Pugh, 19, played all 90 minutes.
