LONDON — Britain on Thursday froze the assets of seven prominent Russian businessmen, including Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich, rapidly shedding its reputation as a place where rich Russians with connections to President Vladimir Putin were welcome to live, invest and donate.
But the country that left the European Union in part to “take back control” of its borders has remained relatively stingy in its welcome of Ukrainian refugees.
Amid a historic wave that has seen more than 2.3 million people flee in just two weeks, Britain is only allowing Ukrainians with family members already in the country to apply for visas.
