NWSL preview: First-place Spirit closes regular season at Chicago

Washington Spirit at Chicago Red Stars

Where: Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill.

When: 8 p.m. Saturday.

Records: Spirit 12-4-3, 39 points; Red Stars 8-5-6, 30 points.

CHASING THE SHIELD: The Spirit has already clinched a playoff berth and the best record in its four-year history, and with a victory, the club would also secure the NWSL Shield, awarded to the regular season champions. Washington is one point ahead of the Portland Thorns, who will close the regular season Sunday at New Jersey-based Sky Blue FC. If the front-runners are level on points, Portland would win the shield on the head-to-head tiebreaker (0-0 away draw and 4-1 home victory).
