Major League Soccer on Friday fined New York City FC player Diego Martinez an undisclosed amount for swearing at a D.C. United ball kid during last Sunday’s match at RFK Stadium. However, the league was unable to corroborate claims by fans in the vicinity of the sideline incident that Martinez had directed a homophobic slur at the child.
League officials interviewed about a dozen people.
“Based on the investigation and the testimony of multiple witnesses, MLS did not corroborate the report that the player used a homophobic slur,” the league said in a written statement. “The league did find, however, that the player directed an obscenity towards a D.
