English soccer stalwart Manchester United on Friday named Ruben Amorim as its new head coach, replacing Erik ten Hag, who was fired Monday after a grim start to the Premier League season.
The 39-year-old native of Portugal is seen as one of the brightest young minds in European soccer coaching. In 2021, he led Portuguese side Sporting CP to its first league title in 19 years and then added a second championship in 2023-24. This season, Sporting has won all nine of its league matches to stand atop the standings, with 30 goals scored and only two against.
