Manchester City’s Benjamin Mendy suspended, faces rape and sexual assault charges

Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy was suspended by the club Thursday pending an investigation, after being charged with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.

The charges stem from alleged incidents involving three accusers dating back to last year. Mendy, 27, is set to appear in court Friday, according to Cheshire police.

“The charges relate to three complainants over the age of 16 and are alleged to have taken place between October 2020 and August 2021,” police said in a statement. Mendy “has been remanded in police custody and is set to appear at Chester Magistrates’ Court on Friday 27 August.
