Lamar Neagle is red-hot. So why isn’t he starting? Because D.C. United is red-hot, too.

Lamar Neagle is D.C. United‘s top scorer with nine goals, six coming in the past eight matches. His two-goal burst in an upset at Toronto before MLS’s international break secured him player of the week honors. He is also among the team leaders in assists with six.

But when the opening whistle sounds Sunday for the regular season home finale against New York City FC, Neagle will, in all likelihood, be watching from the bench.

Since midseason, when United shook up an edgeless attack by acquiring two players and altering the lineup and formation, Neagle has begrudgingly embraced a reserve role.
