Josef Martinez, a Venezuelan striker who obliterated the MLS scoring record while helping Atlanta United to the championship game, was named the league’s MVP on Wednesday.
He won in a landslide, garnering almost 48 percent of the votes from players, club representatives and reporters. Teammate Miguel Almiron was second with 15 percent and Los Angeles Galaxy star Zlatan Ibrahimovic was next at 11.6.
Wayne Rooney, who led D.C. United’s second-half charge from last place to a playoff berth, was fourth at 7.8 percent and Los Angeles FC’s Carlos Vela received 5.3.
