CHICAGO — D.C. United was staring down certain defeat Saturday night at bone-chilling Soldier Field — down a goal against the Chicago Fire, down to the final seconds and down on its luck after an excruciating misstep by its most lethal player moments earlier.
And then something remarkable happened, on a sequence that began routine but ended with an astonishing equalizer by second-year forward Jacob Murrell in the sixth minute of stoppage time. With his back to the goal in the heart of a crowded penalty area, the former Georgetown star flicked the ball with his right foot, over his head, over the defense and into the far side of the net to earn a 2-2 draw.
