Italian soccer club Inter Milan announced Thursday that midfielder Christian Eriksen will not be allowed to play in that country’s professional league this season after suffering an on-field heart attack while playing for Denmark in this past summer’s European Championship.
Eriksen had a cardioverter defibrillator device installed as part of his recovery from the heart attack, which he suffered June 12 in Denmark’s first group-stage match against Finland. The pacemaker-like device can prevent future cardiac arrests by electronically jolting the heart to restore its proper rhythm.
“With reference to the registration rights of the player Eriksen, it should be noted that following a serious injury which occurred during the European Championship in June 2021, the player has been temporarily inhibited by the Italian medical authority from sporting activity in the current season” Inter Milan said in a statement, adding that the Italian ruling would not prevent Eriksen from playing in another country.
