For three weeks, Bobby Boswell found himself in an unusual and uncomfortable position: on D.C. United’s bench instead of on the back line. He had lost his starting job to Sean Franklin and relinquished the captaincy to Steve Birnbaum.
The changes were not unexpected. In preseason, Boswell and Ben Olsen had engaged in several conversations about, the coach said, “what this may look like and what it may not look like.”
Through two defeats and a draw, it didn’t include Boswell. In need of stronger personality and presence in the lineup, however, Olsen returned to his veteran center back.
