Georgetown, Virginia, VCU among seeded teams in NCAA men’s tournament

Virginia, Georgetown and Virginia Commonwealth were among 16 teams to receive first-round byes in the NCAA men’s soccer tournament, while Maryland, William and Mary, Old Dominion and Virginia Tech will open at home Thursday.

Despite the large number of teams from the D.C. region in the 48-school competition, none will face one another in either of the first two rounds.

The Cavaliers, who lost to top-ranked Wake Forest on penalty kicks in the Atlantic Coast Conference final, are the highest-seeded local side (No. 11) and will carry a 12-3-5 record into a second-round match against Fordham or St.
