From A-listers to political titans, the NWSL’s biggest new players are in the boardroom

ORLANDO — The biggest boost to the National Women’s Soccer League this winter came not through a player signing, TV campaign or expansion announcement.

It landed with an invaluable pop from across the Pacific with photos of tennis superstar Naomi Osaka wearing the gear of an NWSL team in late January. It was a sign not only of her support of fellow female athletes but of her financial investment in the North Carolina Courage.

“Proud to have you join our boardroom!” NWSL Commissioner Lisa Baird tweeted in reaction to a photo of Osaka sporting a blue Courage jersey and red cap.
