George Baldock, a former Premier League player who joined Athens-based Panathinaikos earlier this year, was found dead at age 31, according to Greek authorities.
Police said Baldock was found Wednesday evening in the swimming pool at his home in an Athens suburb, where efforts at cardiopulmonary resuscitation were unsuccessful (via Reuters). A police spokeswoman told the Associated Press that while “there is no evidence of a criminal act,” an investigation is ongoing. Authorities said they would look into surveillance footage while they await results of a toxicology test (via the BBC).
Baldock’s Greek heritage enabled the English-born defender to earn 12 caps with the Greece national team, with his most recent appearance coming in March.
