FIFA, D.C. organizers meet virtually to discuss area’s 2026 World Cup bid and FedEx Field

Stripped of the intimacies of in-person visits by the pandemic, FIFA has continued to virtually meet with organizers from the American cities vying for a part in hosting the 2026 World Cup. The Washington area’s turn came Thursday with a focus on FedEx Field in Landover, Md.

The region has experience hosting global soccer’s showcase event — both the men’s and women’s versions — and its infrastructure was among the selling points offered by D.C. organizers.

“Today’s discussion really focused around FedEx Field, the existing stadium we’re proposing. It talked about the spectator experience, the field of play and then just the surrounding infrastructure around the stadium,” said Greg O’Dell, president and chief executive of EventsDC, the official events and sports authority for the city.
