Euro 2016: Italy must deal with its demons in Monday match against Spain

Congratulations, Italy. You pulled off a convincing upset against Belgium, sucked the life out of Sweden and silenced the skeptics by topping Group E.

Now here’s your prize: two-time defending European champion Spain. The two Mediterranean powers are set to clash at the Stade de France Monday (Noon Eastern, ESPN2) in what will no doubt be the most intriguing matchup in this round of 16.

Spain knocked Italy out in the quarterfinal stage of the 2008 Euros, then throttled them, 4-0, in the 2012 European championship game. Italy has not beaten Spain in a major tournament since the 1994 World Cup.
