In July 1966, England defeated West Germany, 4-2 in extra time, at Wembley Stadium to win the World Cup, the crowning international achievement for the nation credited with inventing modern soccer as we know it.
In the nearly 55 years since, the Germans have consistently exacted their revenge to the point where they hardly even consider England a true rival anymore, their international glories over that span — three World Cup titles, three European Championships as either West Germany or a unified nation — far exceeding those of the island nation to the north.
The two sides will meet again Tuesday at Wembley with a spot in the Euro 2020 quarterfinals on the line (noon Eastern, ESPN).
