Breaking: Emma Hayes is set to become coach of the U.S. women’s national team as the decorated program looks to bounce back after a disappointing World Cup.
Hayes, the Chelsea women’s coach, arrives at a critical time for the United States, which is in the midst of a roster transition after faltering at the World Cup. The U.S. women underperformed throughout the event and lost to Sweden in the round of 16.
The 47-year-old Hayes will depart Chelsea after this season, the club said in a statement, and doesn’t have much time to prepare the national team for its next big test — the 2024 Summer Games in Paris.
