Marco Etcheverry, a mullet-haired midfield maestro whose infallible left foot helped propel D.C. United to three titles in MLS’s first four seasons, was elected to the National Soccer Hall of Fame on Sunday.
Known as “El Diablo,” Etcheverry received the most votes on the veteran ballot, a year after finishing second in the same category behind his Bolivian and United collaborator, Jaime Moreno.
Clint Dempsey, Shannon Boxx and Hope Solo were elected on the player ballot. New procedures cleared the way for a second person, Linda Hamilton, from the veteran division, which is for players who run out of eligibility in the main category.
