D.C. United and Seattle assistant Gonzalo Pineda failed to strike a deal that would have made him the team’s next coach, people familiar with the situation said Thursday.
United offered Pineda the job, one person said, but negotiations broke down and the sides were unable to reach agreement on various elements.
Two others confirmed Pineda was out of the running. All of those people spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the matter. None shared any specific details about the breakdown.
United is expected to expand its search next week by interviewing several new European candidates.
