D.C. United lost an academy player to European allure but secured another one of its teenage prospects.
Midfielder Bryang Kayo (Poolesville, Md.) signed Thursday with Orange County SC, a second-division team in Irvine, Calif. With his sights set overseas, however, he is expected to move to German club Wolfsburg next summer when he turns 18, FIFA’s threshold for players to sign abroad.
Meantime, midfielder Moses Nyeman (Riverdale, Md.) is planning to become the 13th player since 2009 to sign a homegrown contract with United, people close to the situation said. The sides have reached an agreement in principle, said one source who requested anonymity because the deal has not been finalized.
