D.C. United has signed U.S. under-23 national team goalkeeper Charlie Horton, who had left Leeds United in England last fall for family reasons.
United acquired his league rights from the New England Revolution, the Insider has learned. The trade details, which likely involved a draft pick or allocation money, have not been made public yet.
With veteran starter Bill Hamid sidelined for months with a knee injury, United was in need of another goalkeeper to back up Andrew Dykstra and compete for playing time. The other keeper under contract, Travis Worra, is in his second pro season and seems likely to go on loan to the third-tier Richmond Kickers again.
