D.C. United has hired Lucy Rushton as general manager, multiple people familiar with the decision said Monday, making her MLS’s highest-ranking woman in charge of player personnel and one of the few in U.S. professional sports.
Rushton’s hiring comes five months after the Miami Marlins made Kim Ng the first general manager of a Major League Baseball team. It also comes as NFL and NBA team have promoted women to assistant coaching positions and other executive roles.
Rushton joins another high-ranking woman in United’s organization, team president Danita Johnson, an experienced NBA and WNBA executive who was hired by United this winter.
