D.C. United has begun making good on plans to continue remaking its roster by declining to exercise goalkeeper Alex Bono’s contract option.
Bono started all but five matches and, although United conceded 70 goals, third most in MLS, the team’s overall defense was more culpable.
“I was definitely surprised,” Bono said in an interview. “The club is headed in a positive direction and I was very much looking forward to being a part of that. I respect the club’s decision. I’m grateful for the opportunity I’ve had the last couple years to try to make an impact.
