D.C. United on Monday began reworking its roster by cutting ties with six players, including former starters Yamil Asad and Joseph Mora, and allowing two longtime MLS figures to leave via free agency.
Asad, an Argentine attacker who fell out of favor with first-year coach Hernán Losada, and Mora, a Costa Rican defender, had combined for 166 regular season appearances and 134 starts the past four seasons.
The other departures are Peruvian attacker Yordy Reyna, Argentine striker Ramón Ábila, Venezuelan forward Jovanny Bolívar and defender Michael DeShields, a 2021 first-round draft pick.
Though United did not formally announce they wouldn’t return, defender Frédéric Brillant, 36, and reserve goalkeeper Chris Seitz, 34, are unlikely to re-sign after their contracts expired.
