Desperately short of center backs as the season nears, D.C. United is close to acquiring Christopher McVey from Inter Miami, people close to the situation said Wednesday.
United plans to relinquish an international roster slot and financial considerations, known as general allocation money, one person said.
McVey, 26, is a 6-foot-4 defender who started all 34 matches in 2022 — his first year in MLS — before seeing his playing time dwindle after Miami hired Coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino last midseason. In 2023, he ended up playing 16 regular season matches and starting 12, none after July 1.
