D.C. United is close to acquiring Argentine playmaker Luciano Acosta on loan from Boca Juniors, sources familiar with the negotiations said Friday night.
Acosta, 21, was scheduled to join Brazilian club Coritiba, but Globo Esporte reported Friday that the plan was scuttled because Boca was planning to send him to an MLS club instead.
The player has yet to sign with United, one source cautioned, but a deal could be reached as early as next week.
Argentine reporter Lucho Torres Toranzo tweeted Acosta was close to joining United.
Just 5 feet 3, Acosta possesses the creativity and technical skills that United has coveted all winter.
